ESCANABA, MI -- With increased scrutiny toward the safety of our troops, the Army initiated an intense effort of "up-armoring" vehicles. The Army requested Freightliner harden the M-915A3 against exlosive blasts, while increasing the electrical power demand.

To that end, EMP worked closely with Freightliner engineers to increase power capabilities. The end result is Freightliner has introduced the M-915A5 with armor plating on floor and firewall. Armor is so heavy that suspensions are now significanly more robust, and the Detroit Diesel Series 60 engine is now rated at 500 horsepower. This beefier DDC engine spins the EMP Power 450, the best-in-class brushless alternator, which was selected to support the Army's power hungry communications gear.

These severe-duty, specially equipped Freighliner M-915 series tractors will be used by active, reserve and National Guard units around the world. The Army calls them "linehaul tractors"; production is expected to begin in late 2009.
