Automation Engineer
Manufacturing: Escanaba, MI
1st Shift


Support the Engineering and Production Floor staff with automation items related to current processes and new projects.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Assist production floor workers in diagnosing a broad range of manufacturing issues.
  • Fluent understanding of robotic teach pendant programming.
  • Modifying or adding to robot programs to better produce a product or to add products.
  • Work with existing I/O to add sensors and/or small devices.
  • Ability to diagnose mechanical system malfunctions.
  • Ability to work with small machines like pin stampers, leak testers, assembly presses, etc…
  • Ability to analyze PLC ladder logic to help in troubleshooting.
  • Ability to analyze electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic schematics.
  • Work with personnel to solve problems and improve processes on existing equipment.
  • Train production personnel on use of equipment.
  • Roll out lessons learned from previous equipment or processes.
  • Consult with other engineers and foremen to solve production problems.
  • Basic understanding of lean manufacturing principals.
  • Basic understanding of machine tool M-codes and I/O interfaces.
  • Recognize possible safety issues in workcells and assist in correction.
  • Investigate new manufacturing processes.
  • Duties listed in Level 1 in addition to:
  • Produce dimensional cell layouts.
  • Concept and implement cell I/O arrangements for robotic interfacing.
  • Work with vendors to obtain proposals and quotes.
  • Specify and purchase equipment and supplies.
  • Create and maintain standard components list.
  • Design and creation of electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic schematics
  • Design and creation of ladder logic for PLC systems for machines and cell controllers.
  • Design and detail automation tooling.
  • Create simulation models for robot reach and clearance.
  • Cost analysis and layout for potential automated equipment.
  • Knowledge of robotic safety rules and regulations.
  • Estimate cycle times and throughput.
  • Manage installation and build of equipment.
  • Manage machine modification projects.
  • Use production outputs to determine problem areas or areas for improvement.
  • Basic understanding of machine tool G-code programming.


4 year degree in related field and 3 years minimum experience preferred
