Summary

The Supplier Development Engineer works with both internal and external stake holders to develop and implement best practices that emphasizes defect prevention, reduction in variation and waste providing for continual improvement. The Supplier Development Engineer position requires in-depth knowledge of manufacturing processes, basic business, and project management skills as well as root cause/corrective action skills. The Supplier Development Engineer will be engaged on multiple supplier development projects.

Essential Job Functions

 Quality management system

  • Understands and applies the company quality policy and objectives.
  • Responsible for maintaining and following the current Quality Management System, standard operating procedures, work instructions & records in support of the company quality policy.

Product realization

  • Stay current and up to date on any changes that may affect the supply and demand of needed products and material and advise others on any impact.
  • Participate in cross functional teams in the development of new products or changes related to current products in meeting customer requirements.
  • Assist in new product launches to ensure that supplier quality meets the required standards.
  • Work with engineering team to define process parameters and criteria to ensure supplier’s process capability is effective to meet product and process requirements.
  • Carry out supplier validation audits, with supplier support and supplier advanced product quality planning (APQP).
    Maintains and develops the company supplier quality manual.

Measurement, analysis, and improvement

  • Assist in the supplier approval process by assessing manufacturing/technology capabilities and health, safety, and environmental risks.
  • Provide concise, complete, and accurate documentation of inspection results relative to area of responsibility. In appropriate functional areas, this refers to supporting inspection and test status requirements defined by regulations, engineering product specifications or Control Plans, PPAP approval or product warrant submissions.
  • Monitor and report on supplier product quality and performance.
  • Promote the use of customer preferred techniques for continuous improvement such as Lean, Six-sigma, Poke-Yoke (Error proofing), Measurement System Analysis and PFMEA (Process Failure Mode Effect Analysis).
  • Facilitate root cause analysis and corrective actions of supplier quality issues. Perform on-site supplier visits for root cause analysis and verification of corrective actions.
  • Work with the supplier to review manufacturing processes. Collate and evaluate supplier quality data to identify process improvement opportunities within the supply chain.
  • Facilitate the escalation of unresolved supplier quality issues within assigned projects and suppliers.
  • Assist in establishing, implementing, and maintaining the quality management system. Support the organization’s goals in the performance of daily activities.

  • Lead and or support technicians.
  • Liaise and communicate with other departments, customers, suppliers, and service providers.

Minimum Qualifications and Requirements

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution preferred
  • 3+ years of experience in a quality control or manufacturing process improvement role
  • Working knowledge of ISO/IATF16949 quality certification standards and related requirements (PPAP, PFMEA, etc.)
  • Proficient in the use of MS-Excel and data analysis
  • Excellent communication skills to manage customer and supplier relationships
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
